Tuscany villas and Chianti may be the trademarks of Northern Italian tourism, but as anyone who has visited the region will attest, there is much more to this province than initially meets the eye. And while the beautiful, sprawling landscapes are also quite iconic, flower lovers will be delighted to know that Tuscany offers plenty of spots in which to engage in floral appreciation.

In fact, the region goes so far as to include flower-spotting itineraries, dubbed the “flower roads”. Located in areas generally devoid of Tuscany villas and other man-made interferences with nature, these roads attract flower-loving pilgrims from all over the world.

What’s more, these areas of floral excellence are not restricted to just one area of Tuscany: they can be found a bit all over the province, from the Apennine mountains to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. As such, no matter where their Tuscany villas are located, interested visitors will always have a “flower road” close by.

Those interested in this type of tour would do well to visit the walled city of Lucca, within which dwells the Guinigui Tower, with its sky-high garden. From there, Siena and its botanical gardens constitute a logical stop, as does Maremma Park, a lovely spot in which to trek, bike, and witness a varied array of flora from several distinct ecosystems. The Pistoia Apennines, Elba and Capraia (in the Tuscan Archipelago) and any number of noble villas and mansions in the province are other interesting spots in which to find botanical gardens and fields replete with colourful flowers. Flower lovers renting Tuscany villas will find plenty of places in the province in which to engage in their hobby of choice!

There are already plenty of reasons for tourists from all over the world to rent Tuscany villas, especially in the spring and summer. But just in case you needed one more, Florence will be hosting a whole year of art festivals in 2012, with several museums welcoming temporary exhibitions and other related events.

While this event is not new (this year’s edition is the seventh), it is always quite popular, with 2011 statistics showing a 6% increase in museum visits. Usually offering a mixture of hidden or lesser-known masterpieces and more famous works on loan from other galleries, these highlights of Florence’s artistic year are bound to entice locals just as much as tourists renting Tuscany villas in the areas around the city.

2012’s edition kicked off on March 20, with the opening of a tapestry exhibition at the Uffizzi Gallery. Palazzo Pitti followed suit with the inauguration of an exhibition about Japan, a country Italians cherish considerably, on April 3. Still to come, in such venues as the Galleria Dell’Accademia and the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, are exhibitions about fables, Florentine gothic art, and an exhibition called ‘Art Becomes Art’, which links 20th century art to that of previous centuries.

The year-long festival, which undoubtedly warrants a visit from anyone renting Tuscany villas in 2012, draws to a close with an exhibition about Amerigo Vespucci, which simultaneously closes a year of celebrations of the Italian explorer. This exhibition, held in conjunction with the Gilcrease Museum, of Oklahoma, USA, will focus on artifacts from Native American tribes, and will run until the 3rd of December.

The wealth and variety of exhibitions on offer in Florence this year can only lead to the conclusion that the ‘capital’ of Tuscany is a city art aficionados will not want to pass up on in 2012!

I went on holiday with my family and we range from 60 years to 2 years so finding a villa to suit all our needs was proving to be quite tricky. When I found your website I just felt a sense of relief

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
